The Seven Sisters, 7 oils on canvas 30 x 90cm by Annelies Clarke

The seven (sister) churches are painted as female figures, each in a particular pose and with a colour palette that reflects the situation and character of the church she personifies. The paintings illustrate the contents of the letters Jesus dictates to the apostle John so that he can warn each church about the events that are about to happen - the Apocalypse.

The churches were not above criticism – Laodicea, for example, was warned that it was too lukewarm and was about to be ‘spat out’ - but still Jesus describes them as light-bearers and lampstands. They are called to be lights in a dark world, because together, and with the churches of all ages, the church is the bride of Christ, the one He loves and prepares the wedding feast for at the end of the Book of Revelation.

Accompanying the paintings will be the seven relevant pages from the artist's on-going project to illustrate the entire Book of Revelation (see below, illustrating the church in Thyatira.)
